Lottery Project Update – Timbers in North Transept Roof

Lottery Project Update – Timbers in North Transept Roof

Lottery Project Update – Timbers in North Transept Roof 150 150 Sutterton Parish Church

We have the report on the Dendrochronology investigation relating to the timbers in the north transept roof.

In summary the results indicate the timbers were felled at some time between 1528 and 1553. This period covers the last years of the reign of Henry VIII and the reign of his son Edward VI. It also coincides with the time that Thomas Cranmer was Archbishop of Canterbury. It will be remembered that Cranmer’s family were from Sutterton.

Given the date of the roof, it seems possible that the roof and the huge perpendicular window of the north transept were part of the same re-ordering project.
